Scaling & Root Planing

scaling

Treatment for periodontitis usually begins with a thorough cleaning that may include scaling to remove plaque and tartar deposits beneath the gum line.  The tooth roots may also be planed to smooth the root surface allowing the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth.

This scaling and root planing is completed with the use of a local anesthetic in the affected areas.  A full mouth scaling and root planing is usually scheduled in two 1-hour appointments approximately two weeks apart.  Following the completion of this therapy, an antibiotic may be prescribed.  A follow-up appointment in the form of a periodontal cleaning and exam is recommended three months later.  A long term maintenance program will be suggested by the doctors at this time.
